The series, which aired from 1997 to 2007, was based on Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin’s 1994 film and continued the tale a year later. The show, which revolved around a military unit known as SG-1, followed missions via an ancient alien gateway to other planets in quest of knowledge, allies, and technology, inventing a framework that combined science fiction with military drama and helped sustain the series for a decade.

After returning to Netflix in late 2020, Stargate SG-1 was withdrawn on December 1, 2022, when Amazon consolidated MGM’s catalog for Prime Video after acquiring the studio. The newly announced license agreement returns the flagship series to Netflix, although it only pertains to Stargate SG-1 and does not include spinoffs such as Stargate: Atlantis or Stargate: Universe, which are still exclusive to Prime Video.

The announcement is timed to coincide with other franchise-related events. Amazon MGM Studios stated in March that it is working on a new Stargate television series, describing it as a new original project that would kick off a new chapter in the franchise. While narrative specifics and casting are unknown, the development announcement has reignited excitement in the franchise as it prepares for more attention on Netflix. The arrangement also comes after Amazon licensed multiple movies to Netflix, including the James Bond flicks, indicating a growing cooperation between the two firms.
